Chaos gripped Birmingham’s nightlife when a car ploughed into revellers outside the Tunnel Club, leaving six injured and sparking attempted murder charges.

Birmingham’s vibrant nightlife was left reeling after a shocking attack outside the Tunnel Club in the early hours of 4 October last year, when a car was deliberately driven into a crowd of revellers on Livery Street in the Jewellery Quarter. The horrifying moment, which occurred around 3 am, left six people injured and five hospitalised, plunging the city’s clubbing community into chaos.

Police have now charged 22-year-old Mohammed Suffi with attempted murder, violent disorder, and dangerous driving in connection with the incident. Suffi, a Birmingham local, is accused of mowing down clubgoers with a vehicle in a deliberate act of violence. He has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as clubbers queued or made their way home from the popular venue. Screams rang out as the vehicle mounted the pavement, tearing through a group gathered outside. The driver fled the scene, sparking a rapid police response and widespread public concern.

West Midlands Police launched a manhunt in the immediate aftermath, tracking Suffi down within days. In a major update, three additional men—Daanyal Hussain, 20; Armaan Abid, 23; and Mustafa Gohari, 21, all from Birmingham—have also been charged with violent disorder linked to the same incident. They are expected in court on 20 June.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “We’ve charged a man with attempted murder after a number of people were injured when a car was driven at a crowd outside a Birmingham nightclub last year.”

The Tunnel Club, known for its electronic and underground music events, sits in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and draws large crowds each weekend. While the motive for the attack remains unclear, the brazenness and brutality of the incident have left the local nightlife scene shaken.

Several club regulars and local residents are now calling for greater safety measures around late-night venues. Questions are being raised about the adequacy of security and policing in nightlife hotspots, particularly in light of a reported uptick in violent incidents across the city after dark.

“It could’ve been anyone standing there,” said one shaken eyewitness, who asked not to be named. “You go out for a night of music and fun, not expecting to end up in a hospital.”

The attack has reignited broader concerns about violence and disorder surrounding Birmingham’s nightlife. With cases of knife crime and assaults also on the rise, some fear that the atmosphere outside popular clubs is becoming increasingly volatile.
