Charlie Mitchell, 26, was found dead a day after being reported missing from his Leeds home.

A West Yorkshire Police officer who went missing over the weekend has tragically been found dead.

Charlie Mitchell, 26, a serving patrol officer based in Halifax, was reported missing from his home in Leeds on Saturday night. The force said concerns were raised for his welfare, prompting a search operation involving local officers.

On Sunday at around 5.30pm, police discovered his body in St Aidan’s Nature Reserve, a popular wildlife spot located between Leeds and Castleford.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The Coroner’s Office has been informed and a file is being prepared.

Mitchell’s family have been informed of the devastating news and are receiving support from police liaison officers.

A spokesperson for the force said: “His family have been informed and officers are continuing to provide support to them at this difficult time. There are no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner’s Office has been informed.”

Charlie was off duty at the time of his disappearance. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the force, particularly among colleagues at the Calderdale District where he was stationed.

Assistant Chief Constable Robert McCoubrey described the news as “absolutely tragic” and extended heartfelt condolences to Mitchell’s loved ones.

“Charlie’s death in these circumstances is absolutely tragic,” McCoubrey said. “We offer our sincere condolences to his family and will be continuing to give them all the support we can at this very difficult time.

“His death has also come as a terrible shock to his colleagues in Calderdale District and the wider West Yorkshire Police family, and we will be making sure that all necessary support is in place for everyone who worked with him or knew him.”

The force added that support mechanisms have been activated for officers and staff affected by the news, with wellbeing resources available for anyone in need.

Mitchell’s body was found in a quiet, rural part of the St Aidan’s reserve, a location known for its walking trails and wildlife. The area is often frequented by locals and nature enthusiasts, but on Sunday it became the focus of an urgent search that ended in tragedy.

News of his death has prompted a wave of tributes on social media from those who knew him personally and professionally. Messages have described him as dedicated, kind-hearted, and deeply respected among his peers.

Although authorities are not treating his death as suspicious, the incident will likely be subject to a formal inquest once the coroner receives full details from police.

The loss of such a young officer, who was committed to serving his community, is being mourned across the force. West Yorkshire Police has asked the public to respect the privacy of Charlie’s family as they come to terms with their loss.

No further details have been released at this time.
