Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo’s royal dance spoof stirs controversy among royal watchers and fans

London, 25 June 2025 – Reality TV personalities Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo have ignited a storm online after recreating Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s now-famous ‘Baby Mama’ dance — inside Buckingham Palace.

The couple, who are expecting their first child, were attending a reception for The King’s Trust, an initiative launched by King Charles to support young people. While at the event, the duo filmed themselves mimicking the Sussexes’ dance to the viral Baby Mama track, dancing on one of the Palace’s grand staircases.

This comes just weeks after Meghan shared a video of her and Harry dancing to the same song, reportedly taken in the birthing suite during Princess Lilibet’s arrival in 2021. Their version included Meghan twerking in front of the camera, which received a mixed response at the time due to the couple’s ongoing ties to the monarchy.

Although Jamie and Sophie didn’t mention the Duke and Duchess of Sussex directly, the connection was unmistakable. Jamie even captioned the video with a cheeky nod: “They said we couldn’t film in Buckingham Palace…”

Royal fans were quick to draw comparisons — and some criticism. While many viewed the gesture as light-hearted, others slammed it as disrespectful, especially considering the formal setting and the Sussexes’ controversial reception over their original dance clip.

Despite having stepped back from their royal duties in 2020, Meghan and Harry’s actions are still held to scrutiny. Their Baby Mama video was considered inappropriate by some, particularly those who feel the couple should maintain a certain decorum due to their royal links.

Jamie, 36, and Sophie, 30, have previously found fame through the reality series Made in Chelsea and currently co-host a podcast together. They confirmed their pregnancy earlier this year and have embraced their upcoming journey into parenthood with visible excitement.

Their stunt at Buckingham Palace, however, has stirred debate about the blurred lines between royal reverence and modern celebrity behaviour. Some royal supporters defended the couple’s video, calling it a bit of fun during an otherwise formal event, while critics argued that the setting demands greater respect.

The controversy adds to the ever-growing collection of awkward intersections between pop culture and royal protocol — and further demonstrates how the Sussexes’ influence continues to ripple through British society, even from afar.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Meghan and Harry’s viral moments still have the power to fuel royal drama, whether they’re twerking in a hospital suite or inspiring spoofs in the halls of Buckingham Palace.
