Charlie Lawson says he’s in “great pain” and waiting for urgent transfer to the spinal unit after losing the ability to walk.

Charlie Lawson, the actor best known for playing Jim McDonald in Coronation Street, has revealed he is back in hospital and in severe pain following a mystery condition that has left him unable to walk.

The 65-year-old soap icon, who first appeared on Corrie in 1989, posted a candid update from his hospital bed at Macclesfield, disclosing that he’s been struggling with serious mobility issues after falling twice at home. “I can’t stand on my tiptoes,” he told followers on social media. “If I stand up I just fall over.”

The alarming condition, which has yet to be diagnosed, has prompted a series of medical checks. Charlie confirmed that his physiotherapist sent him straight to A&E earlier this week, where he underwent an MRI scan. But despite being discharged, his symptoms worsened, and he was “whisked back in” for more tests.

Speaking from a treatment cubicle in Macclesfield Hospital’s special day care unit, Lawson explained that he’s now waiting for a transfer to the spinal unit at Salford Royal, hoping specialists there can finally provide answers. “That’s the plan,” he said in a weary video posted on X (formerly Twitter). “But last time I was in this very cubicle, I ended up sent home by half past ten at night—so we’ll wait and see.”

Wearing a hospital gown and attempting to remain upbeat, Lawson addressed fans directly. “Well hello folks,” he began, trying to mask his discomfort. “Here I am again.” Despite the pain, he tried to reassure supporters by adding, “I’m fine,” though his strained expression said otherwise.

He captioned the post “Encore une fois!!!” – French for “one more time” – hinting at the frustration he’s feeling at yet another return to hospital.

In a follow-up message, Lawson was blunt about the reality of his condition. “I simply can’t walk properly. I’m in great pain,” he wrote. “This is very comfortable lying here, but when I stand up, I just fall over. Something’s seriously gone wrong. I’ll keep you posted. Cheerio now!”

Fans rallied behind the actor with messages of support flooding the comments. One wrote: “Best wishes for a speedy recovery @charlie_lawson1. Hope they get to the bottom of what’s going on this time.” Another offered: “Sending you lots of good Irish luck and blessings from home!! Hopefully you’ll be back on your feet in no time!”

Lawson responded personally to several, thanking one supporter and adding: “I just need a bl***y date for The Salford Royal.”

The Northern Irish star has long been a fan favourite thanks to his tough, volatile portrayal of Jim McDonald, a role he played on and off for 11 years. His last appearance in the soap was in 2018.

While he’s best remembered for his iconic lines and fiery storylines in Weatherfield, Lawson has also battled health issues before. In 2018, he collapsed on stage mid-performance due to a suspected mini-stroke. At the time, he bounced back quickly—but this latest ordeal appears more serious.

For now, fans remain hopeful that with expert spinal care, he’ll soon be back walking his dog in the countryside—as one well-wisher put it.

Lawson promised to continue updating followers as he awaits news. “Cheerio now,” he signed off in true Jim McDonald style, adding a brave smile to his heartfelt message.
