Bristol rocked by bomb fears as police raid home, arrest man, and evacuate entire street

Residents of a quiet Bristol suburb were forced to flee their homes in terror last night after police arrested a man suspected of harbouring explosive materials. The dramatic scenes unfolded on South Liberty Lane in the Ashton Vale area, prompting authorities to declare a major incident.

The ordeal began shortly before 6pm on Monday when emergency services were alerted to reports of a man acting suspiciously at a property. Avon and Somerset Police responded swiftly, fearing that the individual might have access to potentially explosive items.

What followed was a swift and sweeping operation. Officers arrested a man at 7:10pm, and a bomb disposal team arrived at the scene just 40 minutes later. A 100-metre cordon was imposed around the area, with 63 homes evacuated from South Liberty Lane, Risdale Road and Swiss Lane.

Police confirmed that more than 60 households were impacted, with families given just moments to gather their belongings and leave. Some residents sought refuge at the Ashton Vale Community Centre, while others left in cars or on foot to stay with relatives or friends.

The atmosphere was tense and chaotic. Blue flashing lights lit up the street as police sealed off the area and ambulances stood ready. Residents described scenes of armed officers patrolling their streets, heightening fears of a potentially devastating discovery.

“It’s been very frightening,” said Sophie Rose, a long-time resident of the area. “I’ve seen armed coppers. I’m scared, tired, and I just want to go home.” Her frustration was palpable as she criticised the lack of communication from officials. “We did have a police lady come down and use the toilet and not say anything, which I didn’t think was helpful—but it is what it is.”

Peter Poland, who lives on Risdale Road, was also ushered out of his home around 7:15pm. He ended up at the community centre, where dozens gathered seeking clarity and comfort. “We’ve just been waiting to hear what’s happening,” he said, describing how he saw police armed with weapons.

Despite the looming fear, a sense of unity developed among the displaced. “These guys have been amazing,” Peter added, nodding to the volunteers helping at the centre. “There’s community spirit—and we’ve won the football, so all good.”

Claire Price, another resident, echoed the shock. “It’s not a good situation, but I guess we just have to do what the police think is safe,” she said. “It’s really shocking—this is usually a quiet area. It’s not nice to have that going on round the corner, but I guess that’s what happens nowadays.”

Police confirmed that no injuries had been reported and reassured the public that safety remained the top priority. “Public safety is our main priority,” a spokesperson stated. “Work at the scene is ongoing and we continue to thank the public for their patience and understanding.”

Residents were told they would not be allowed to return to their homes overnight, prompting some to seek help from the local council for temporary accommodation.

Authorities urged the public to stay away from the area as the investigation continued into the night. The bomb squad remained on site, combing through the suspect property for any potentially dangerous items.

As darkness fell over Ashton Vale, a once peaceful street stood eerily silent, wrapped in police tape and floodlit by emergency vehicles—a stark reminder of how quickly normal life can be thrown into chaos.
