Eubank Jr must pay £10k social media fine before Conor Benn rematch after string of disciplinary hits

Chris Eubank Jr has been fined £10,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for “misuse of social media” in the lead-up to his April showdown with Conor Benn — the latest penalty in a series that has now cost him nearly £485,000.

The sanction, handed down after a hearing with the Southern Area Council on 1 July, follows a string of controversies surrounding Eubank’s intense weight cut prior to the bout. The board did not specify which posts crossed the line but cited “misuse” related to videos Eubank posted showing his weight-loss process, including footage implying the use of a sauna.

While the board stopped short of formally reprimanding sauna use — which is not explicitly banned — officials have previously told BBC Sport that boxers are verbally advised not to rely on such methods, calling it an “inappropriate means” of cutting weight.

Despite missing weight before the bout — which triggered a £375,000 fine — Eubank still made the rehydration limit on fight day and went on to beat Benn on points in their much-hyped grudge match.

The social media videos stirred controversy across the sport, with critics accusing Eubank of flaunting dangerous weight-loss practices. Although the board’s official notice did not directly reference the sauna footage or elaborate on the evidence heard, they issued a “severe reprimand” for Eubank also arriving late to the official weigh-in during fight week.

Eubank, 35, is no stranger to fines. He previously slapped an egg across Benn’s face in a bizarre pre-fight stunt, earning himself a £100,000 penalty. That incident, paired with his missed weight and the new social media sanction, brings his total losses to just under half a million.

He must now pay the £10,000 fine before stepping back into the ring with Benn on 20 September in London, where the two will settle their rivalry in a hotly anticipated rematch.

Neither the board, Eubank’s camp, nor his promotional outfit, Boxxer, responded to BBC Sport’s requests for comment. The board’s statement was buried in the ‘notices’ section of their website last Friday with no press release or formal announcement — a move that has left some critics calling for greater transparency.

The board’s handling of the case has raised questions. There is no written rule banning sauna use, but fighters and trainers say the unwritten guidance is clear. Still, many insist that if the practice is to be penalised, it must be properly codified.

For now, Eubank appears to have convinced the council that he did not breach any formal rules regarding his weight cut. However, the series of incidents has cast a long shadow over his recent performances — and the integrity of the sport’s regulatory standards.

With the rematch just over two months away, Eubank must now put the drama behind him and focus on a rivalry that has already proved combustible both in and out of the ring.
