Major UK supermarkets to adjust opening hours this Easter – plan ahead to avoid disappointment

As millions across the UK prepare for a four-day Easter break, supermarkets are making changes to their opening hours. With Easter falling on Sunday, 20 April 2025, many chains will shut their doors on that day and adjust their hours on the surrounding bank holidays.

From Good Friday through to Easter Monday, leading supermarkets like Aldi, Asda, Tesco, M&S, Lidl, Morrisons, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s will operate reduced hours, with some outlets staying shut entirely on Easter Sunday. Whether you’re stocking up for a family roast or dashing for last-minute eggs, checking your local store’s hours could save you a wasted trip.

Aldi
Aldi stores across the UK will be closed on Easter Sunday, in line with trading laws. Most stores will open from 8 am to 10 pm on Good Friday and Saturday, and then from 8 am to 8 pm on Easter Monday. However, some locations, such as Manchester Arndale, will have shorter hours – 10 am to 6 pm on both Good Friday and Easter Monday. Aldi Ashton-under-Lyne will stick to the full 8 am to 10 pm slots on both Friday and Saturday, but close on Sunday and open 8 am to 8 pm on Monday.

Asda
Asda’s larger supermarkets will also close on Easter Sunday, but most will be open 7 am to 10 pm on Good Friday and Saturday, and 8 am to 10 pm on Easter Monday. Some 24-hour stores, like Asda Eastlands, will keep the lights on from midnight Friday to 10 pm Saturday before closing Sunday. Hazel Grove customers can expect hours of 7 am to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday, with Monday opening at 8 am. Notably, Scottish stores and standalone petrol stations will remain open as usual, as will most Asda Express branches.

Tesco
Tesco will also shut up shop on Easter Sunday, but hours will differ depending on location. Most large stores, such as Horwich Extra and Failsworth Extra, will open from 6 am to 10 pm on Good Friday, run normal hours on Saturday, close on Sunday, and open 8 am to 6 pm on Easter Monday. Scottish branches and Tesco Express stores are largely unaffected, with many remaining open even on Easter Sunday.

M&S (Marks & Spencer)
Marks & Spencer outlets will mostly close on Easter Sunday, but shoppers can visit stores between 8 am and 8 pm on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday. Specific sites like Manchester Market Street and Quayside Media City will open from 10 am to 6 pm on the bank holidays, offering shorter windows for last-minute purchases.

Lidl
Lidl customers should expect normal hours on Good Friday and Saturday, but stores will close on Easter Sunday. Easter Monday opening times will vary, so shoppers are encouraged to check their nearest store online to avoid confusion.

Plan Ahead
With store times varying not only by brand but by individual location, checking online or using supermarket apps is the safest bet. Many chains are also encouraging customers to shop early to avoid peak-hour congestion and disappointment.

The Easter bank holiday weekend traditionally sees a surge in shopping for family meals, Easter egg hunts, and spring essentials. But if you leave it too late, you might find locked doors and empty shelves.

Be Prepared
From Aldi to Waitrose, each supermarket is taking a different approach, but one thing is consistent: Easter Sunday closures for large stores in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In contrast, Scottish stores have more flexibility and may open as normal.

Make sure you’ve got all you need well ahead of Sunday, and double-check those hours before heading out. Happy Easter shopping!
