A 16 year old boy escapes knife-point robbery in broad daylight; police appeal for witnesses

A terrifying knife-point robbery attempt has shaken the town of Hartlepool after a teenage boy was threatened for his bicycle in broad daylight. The chilling incident unfolded late in the morning along Colwyn Road, where a 16-year-old cyclist and his companion were approached by a man with sinister intentions.

The attacker, described as a large-built man with receding grey hair and wearing a grey North Face tracksuit, initially attempted to buy the teenager’s bike. But what began as a casual encounter quickly escalated into a dangerous and traumatic ordeal.

According to police reports, the suspect suddenly produced a knife and demanded the bicycle. The threat left the young victim momentarily frozen — but his quick thinking helped him resist. The boy’s unexpected reaction startled the would-be thief, forcing him to abandon the robbery and flee the scene on foot, heading in the direction of Baden Street.

Cleveland Police have launched a full investigation and are urgently appealing for information from the public. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the attempted robbery.

Detective Sergeant Andy Hampson said:

“This was a brazen and frightening attack in broad daylight on a young person. We are fortunate the victim was not physically injured, but the emotional impact should not be underestimated. We are asking for the community’s help to identify and locate the suspect before he strikes again.”

The attacker’s appearance has been circulated across local networks, and officers are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Extra patrols have also been deployed to reassure residents and encourage witnesses to come forward.

Locals expressed shock and concern over the broad-daylight incident. Colwyn Road, a typically quiet area, has become the focus of community anxiety.

One resident, speaking anonymously, said:

“This is absolutely terrifying. Our kids should feel safe riding their bikes during the day, not fearing some thug with a knife. We just want to know he’s caught before someone gets seriously hurt.”

Police have confirmed that the teenager and his friend are safe and are receiving support following the traumatic encounter. Officers praised the boy’s courage and presence of mind, which likely prevented the situation from becoming more dangerous.

Investigators continue to urge any witnesses who were in the Colwyn Road or Baden Street areas around the time of the incident to contact Cleveland Police directly. Any footage, even if it seems minor, could provide a crucial lead in tracing the knife-wielding suspect.

In a community still reeling from the attempt, the message from law enforcement is clear: vigilance is essential, and the public’s cooperation could help ensure Hartlepool’s streets remain safe for everyone.
